I recognize that being raised the way I was is also a little bit fu*ked up, because your "parents" are essentially guaranteed to die in your twenties. When visiting home, I hang out at my grandmas cemetery more times during the week than I would like to admit. Perhaps this is more associated with the typical pain of an emigrant.

Well, my mom was over 40 when she had me so you know... Dad died when I was 16. It's not that part, it's the coming and doing laundry, opening mail etc. In my family it was understood that once a kid moves out ( whenever they are ready from 21 to never) they have the right to stand on their own. We are here if you need us but we assume you can make it. A bit like in gymnastics when a coach stands by. He is there and will catch/ help if needed but otherwise let's the kids fly :)

Same with my younger brother with whom I have a 17 year difference. Worried about him.


Believe me, I asked God to send me such a family many times.

I couldn't wait to graduate high school and move out. Working sh!t jobs, living in worn-out apartments...wouldn't trade it. I oftentimes worry that my kids are disadvantaged, since they won't probably experience the rough-and-tumble realities of subsistence living. There's something valuable in that struggle.

I don't think there is any reason to as long as your brother will manage to become independent before they sadly die. Another matter is that you live so far away that if they need care he will have a heavy burden.


Nothing is perfect. But my mom was no martyr. She expected the kids to do their part. It was nothing too strict. But since I was about 13/14 I was responsible for washing the dishes. My sister was responsible for bathroom. If we were meeting with friends etc it wasn't a problem but we always tried to fit those things in. During summer holidays when mom was at work we were supposedto clean the house and peel potatoes, veggies etc, do small shopping etc.

On the other hand there was always big respect for boundaries. I could leave my diary anywhere and no-one read it. Our mail was sacred and things never searched. If my mom needed something from her purse dad and us would bring the whole thing, no-one dared to look inside as it was her space. I think it was necessary in conditions as crammed as our flat sometimes was.
