It just makes you look like an a$$ if all you contribute is $5.

Did you miss where I said that Joker contributed that $5 in my name to be funny or are you still stuck on your shame games.
Makes you look like a stupid ass for believing that. 🤣
I believe you and jon are both Mods. and you can't change that. Ha !
You would gain more respect here if you were truthful about your finances

It's no bodies business what my finances are so fvck your respect.
I have given you ass holes plenty of stock tips to make money and it just makes you more jealous every time my stock tips do just that.
Its not my fault that Harry, Milo and Joker have no cash to trade stocks so they are forced to sit on the sidelines.
dolno is the ONLY ONE who listened on my tip when TESLA was popping and made enough to buy a house with money left over.
He posted that so go suck on that you busy body shaming twat.
trying to play the big man all the time.

Oh fvck you jealous Karen.....if Harry wants to brag about his cash or investment portfolio (and post pictures of it) to brag then I posted ten times what he has to shut him up.(and that was just part of it)
Its all in fun Karen so lighten up and let a fart out loud once in awhile and learn how to laugh you old stick in the mud.
Now save your tears and stop your whining about how much money johnny reb has and how he spends it.
Better yet, shut your piehole and m.y.o.b.
Good Day......

Coming from you that's hilarious.

But not as hilarious as the fact that Jim the self-confessed rapist and nun-puncher is so poor that he doesn't even have five dollars to donate to keeping his obsession running. He's on here all day and all night seven days a week, except when he's in prison, but he's so close to losing it all! And he can't even find five dollars to stop his one reason for living disappearing!

There was no real communism in Poland since 1960ties; it was socialism. Regarding the Oscars, what did Obama receive the Oscar for?

Paulina
5 Sep 2024  #544

When I see a movie received an Oscar, I automatically skip watching it.

Hmm, "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy was nominated for a total of 30 Academy Awards and won 17, setting a record for any movie trilogy. I definitely didn't skip that one... :D

what did Obama receive the Oscar for?

lol

I definitely didn't skip that one

I went to the cinema in PL when the second film came out and fell asleep. People do seem to like Tolkien though.

it was socialism

No, it wasn't. It was a distorted parody of it.

what did Obama receive the Oscar for?

Becoming the President of a country in large parts of which and for most of its history, he wouldn't have been allowed to use the front door of a hotel, order a meal in a restaurant or work as a manager.

Paulina

@jon357, LOTR is the best fantasy film adaptation to date according to many :)))

and fell asleep

;O
Not a fan of fantasy genre, I guess?

Becoming the President of a country

Guys, that wasn't a role in a movie though ;D

...or where law of gravity can be suspended on demand but only for the good guys...Bad guys just fall and die.

Also movies where a guy fires a revolver 20 times without reloading...

There are dozens of things which are unhealthy but we do them anyway. E.g,, we live. Do you know that life is a dangerous sexually transmitted disease which always ends with death???????????????????????

No. If it has elves and/or dragons, it's not for me.

I did like the Rivers of London series and was both surprised and pleased to see Polish translations being sold in Empik. I didn't think it would have travelled well abroad however obviously people liked it. Very worth reading.

LOTR is the best

Tolkien lived not far from me. Long before he wrote that series and even longer before I was born though.

No. If it has elves and/or dragons, it's not for me.

Fair enough, to each their own :) I love fantasy though! And "The Lord of the Rings" is a masterpiece, imho, I fell in love with it instantly :))) Actually, you could say that Tolkien pretty much invented this genre as we know it today.

I did like the Rivers of London series

I've never heard of it, I'll have to do some googling. 🤔

Cool :) Was that the area that inspired Shire in his books?

I fell in love with it instantly

I was put off by it when I was a kid. I was a very precocious reader and one of the teachers lent me the book when I was about 9 or 10 which was far too young really.

Was that the area that inspired Shire in his books

I don't think so. It was a suburban terraced house (oldish now, newish then) that he lived in when he was an English lecturer at the local university. AFAIK the shire is sort of based on Herefordshire, Worcestershire, the Welsh borders or thereabouts. That sort of fits in with his literary universe since it's a magical place and you can easily imagine hobbits there.

Did you know that his family came from Krzyżbork, now in Kaliningrad?

do some googling

I liked the ones I've read. There are some more recent ones and also graphic novels. Plus rumours of a TV adaptation. I strongly recommend them and think you'll like them.

Yeah, that's too young. I've read it when I was a teenager.

that he lived in when he was an English lecturer at the local university.

Ah, then no, I meant the place where he lived for some time when he was a kid.

AFAIK the shire is sort of based on Herefordshire, Worcestershire, the Welsh borders or thereabouts.

Yes, that's the area!

Did you know that his family came from Krzyżbork, now in Kaliningrad?

I had no idea :)

It looks beautiful and very "Shirery" judging by the photos :))):

Herefordshire

"Shirery"

They have black and white wooden houses down there. Some of them would suit a Tolkien book.

The Elan Valley is a nice place round there. We once had a holiday there when I was a kid. Hay-on-Wye too, right on the border. It's the city of books, run by a 'King' who lives (or did until he died) in the town's castle though that only really started to happen when Tolkien was already old.

Yes, this looks like the town called Bree in the books:

Breeish

The Elan Valley is a nice place round there.

Elan, Rhayader, Llandrindod - even the names sound like from a fantasy book :)))

This was him. Quite a character: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Booth

My favourite names round there are Oswestry, Chirk and Llangollen which are a few miles further north. There's a bit of overtourism around Symond's Yat (which Tolkien would certainly have known well) but the region as a whole is very quiet. Sadly quite a long drive from my bit of England.

Thanks, quite a character indeed :)

Ahhh, finally - a fellow Tolkien lover on PF!!! :D

The Elan Valley

Btw, this place reminds me of the Vales of Anduin from the books (with the dam being like the Falls of Rauros) - do you think Tolkien could know this place?

do you think Tolkien could know this place?

For sure he'd have known it. It's only a few miles from where he came from and has been a popular beauty spot and venue for excursions for a century. He'd have known it as well as Witkacy would have known Zakopane. In the photo, It looks a bit like the countryside nearer to home for me however when you're on the top of the hills, the view is different, literally almost golden. I only visited once, decades ago on a rather unhappy holiday, but remember it well.

Fortunately it's still fairly unspoilt due to being difficult to build in and only having a small road through. As I remember, "elan" is the Welsh word for "golden" or "shiny". I've only been once but liked it.

Of course such pretty word must mean something beautiful, how could it be any different :D ✨

such pretty word must mean something beautiful,

Elan is a brand of skis, and the word itself means impetus in German.

jon357
6 Sep 2024  #565

Elan

And momentum in French, hence probably the ski brand (though in English we use the French word ēlan in a metaphorical sense) and apparently elk in Azerbaijani.

The picture is totally fake, but it's been circulated for decades now.

Why do you think that?

no real picture of the whole earth from the space and there will never be.

Why not?

Russian city to show embryos to women seeking abortion - media

Pre-natal clinics in the city of Ivanovo in western Russia will try to dissuade women from having an abortion by showing them real-life models of embryos, local media have reported. The initiative comes as Russia aims to improve its birth rate to boost population growth.

Those Russian women haters...Instead of lovingly assure pregnant women that abortion is their moment of liberation...the evil Russian doctors play mind games with them...

Maybe it would be better to first end the senseless war in which hundreds of young Russians die every day. 🤔
