I studied a lot of Eastern European history while there. I was the only person from the former Soviet Union in my classes. I was doing my usual thing, like I do here, of defending my country on every corner. But guess what - even at Columbia I was not alone. In any given class 30-40% of the students would be my allies.

You have an especially important job of telling them the truth, as only you could tell it. Young people are not hopeless, and you have to give them a chance.

So in the spirit of actually changing someone's views, and not just having your own minute on a soapbox, please try to be kind and level headed.

I like kids and young adults so that should not be a problem. They make me feel younger.
