The Saarland once was French, not German, until (re-)occupied by Hitler!
"Deutsch ist die Saar, deutsch immerdar"

Today, although firmly apart of Germany after the founding of the Federal Republic, the French influence is not lost, either in her dialect or her cooking:-)

The Saarland once was French, not German, until (re-)occupied by Hitler!

Na ja....

"....Roman rule ended in the 5th century, when the Franks conquered the territory. For the next 1,300 years the region shared the history of the Kingdom of the Franks, the Carolingian Empire and of the Holy Roman Empire."

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saarland#History

Then there is Alsace...they are now rediscovering their german roots again, after decades of francization.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alsace#After_World_War_II

Or Silesia on the other side....nation state borders have been always artificial..and changeable....

Alsace-Lorraine aka Elsass-Lothringen was not quite the same thing as the Saarland.
First of all, the former had ALWAYS been essentially bilingual French-German, German-French. The Saar area had been solely in French hands for centuries until modern times.

Alsace-Lorraine aka Elsass-Lothringen was not quite the same thing as the Saarland.

Because of the construction and subsequent wars borderland with mixed cultures developed...it's all the same people (when no mass expulsion occured), only the overlord changed often enough.

The Saar area had been solely in French hands for centuries until modern times.

The Saarländer did overwhelmingly vote to stay with Germany as they had been asked...a fascinating fact as they had more or less the choice between being a loser of a war and subsequently being punished for it or being part of the winning team and reaping the rewards...TWO TIMES (1935 and 1955)!

Lyzko

Certainly they voted overwhelmingly to stay with Germany. They were strong armed into doing so...as with the rest of the territory which Hitler claimed for his fiefdom:-) Exactly like the Mafia; play bocci with us.....OR ELSE!

'55 too?

And even in '35....I really think you underestimate how strong the movement for unification with the "Reich" had been...in all territories victim of the Versailles Treaty to righten a "wrong"....and in Austria too.

That's also the reason why the allies left Czechoslovakia hanging, even in their population the will to go to war for something they themselves saw not justifiable was weak (putting one ethnic population under the power of another hostile one with the artificial changing of borders as punishment).

You can't explain everything with "being forced by them Nazis"....it's an easy, comfy way out of reasoning...not only for after-war-Germans...but not true nonetheless.

Interesting:

"....In 1933, a considerable number of political opponents of National Socialism moved to the Saar, as it was the only part of Germany that remained under foreign occupation following World War I. As a result, anti-Nazi groups agitated for the Saarland to remain under British and French occupation under a League of Nations mandate. However, as most of the region's population was German, the mandate was unpopular. A plebiscite was held in the territory on 13 January 1935. ...."

Even anti-Nazi groups moving in didn't help in the long run....

"....with only 8.8% wanting to retain the status quo, primarily as they did not wish to be ruled by Nazis. A third option of joining France received 0.4% of the vote."

And becoming french was even far less popular than falling under the Nazis! No "strong arming" needed...

To be sure, the Nazis, as with all Faschist dictatorships, made "offers" their intended victims of said takeover simply couldn't refuse.
Sound familiar?

Bratwurst Boy

made "offers" their intended victims of said takeover simply couldn't refuse.

Well.....maybe that needs a new definition of "victims"!

Can't fault a politician for using what will get him the votes...the majority wanted what Hitler promised, doesn't make them victims in my book.

The ends NEVER justify the means, B.B.
That's what law and religion hoped to prevent.
Problem is, social convention always gets in the
path of spirituality.

What did religion hope to prevent, Lyzko? Exclusion? Discrimination? Oppression and murder in their = gods name?

When did it ever in it's history!

Just because it lost it's power and influence didn't change this now toothless tiger suddenly to a peacenik pussy cat...

Just in case you forgot:

Not victims!

PS: A rare photo of Saarländers after the plebiscite in 1935

The Rev. Dr. Ludwig Mueller, Roman Catholic Prelate and arch Hitler-supporter was in my opinion a disgrace to the cloth, seen in the light of the Bonhoeffers or Niemoellers out there! There were many like him in the Church and among the German clergy.

Plenty from neighboring lands sadly hopped hook, line and sinker on the Nazi bandwagon. Poor excuses for humans, I'd say.

You lose your idealism, might as well end it all pronto, 'cuz what's left of humanity without hope, what nourishes every waking hour of our day other than dreams of a better tomorrow?

Religion was originally intended to tame the savage breast aka "beast" which was human being, just a tick above the animal kingdom. Spirituality used to be the basis for religion. That changed.

Bratwurst Boy
28 Dec 2019  #102

Spirituality was never the problem, Lyzko. It has been part of mankind since the beginning and can very well and in many cases even better exist and develop and nourish outside of every artificial man-made religion.

Religion on the other hand has been founded by the "beast" itself....and that's exactly how it panned out!

You don't need to lose hope just because religions are being sacked and left behind...maybe quite the contrary, their end gives hope for a new beginning?

In the USA our fascists are from the Liberal Democrats

The left wing lunatics have been claiming that Trump and his supporters have been fascists for years.

From 1860s to 1960s they fought vigorously to stop civil rights. It was the Dems that fought the Civil War to keep the slaves and they also formed the KKK.

A Republican has never owned a slave.

Todays Democrat party has become the biggest hate group in the USA. The MSM not only provides daily attacks against Trump, but lie and simply make up stories. Their hatred for Trump and his voters oozes out at every opportunity.

In the 1960s they realized they could not win the battle against the Blacks, so the corralled them into inner cities and plopped a Planned Parenthood abortion clinic right in the middle of it to control their population.

When Barak Obozo became President fascism spread like WILDFIRE!! From, Antifa, Wall Street protesters and BLM destruction was a weekly occurrence. Lets not forget about scum like Soros funding and staging riots. When a conservative tries to give a speech at college they are shouted down by paid professional protesters.

The Democratic Party = True American Fascism

"Fascist" and "Nazi" have become swear words for any political opinion opposed of ones own...losing most of it's real meaning....this test in the beginning of this thread was a good example....

Joker

.losing most of it's real meaning.

I happen to agree with you BB. Ive been called a white supremacist and a nazi a few times on here, but it doesn't bother me coz I know the truth.

Its well documented how the left shouts out name calling to declare victory upon their opponents.

I'm a RACIST for criticizing anything Obama promotes or sponsors.
I'm a TERRORIST because I believe in 2nd Amendment rights.
I'm a BIGOT if I believe that ALL lives matter
I'm a CONSPIRACY THEORIST for presenting documented facts.
I'm a HOMOPHOBE for believing in the sanctity of marriage between a man and a woman....etc

The new face of the Dem Party Alexarandia Ocasio Cortez just stated: America is a fascist country!
theblacksphere.net/2019/12/aocs-latest-insult-america-is-fascist/

The liberal left is accuses ppl of being fascist or racist if you refuse to agree with their dogma, but are really guilty of doing the exact same thing to promote their agenda.

Another one of his attempts at deflection. He's really not that good at it either...lol

It has become ridiculous...

Check out this nitwit BB, she is the new leader of the Democrats!

youtu.be/j2Z2Z3svuDs

She uses "fascist" on a daily basis, apparently doesnt understand the definition of the word, like her supporters," Millennials" that have never read a book...

Another one of his attempts at deflection.

The only conclusion that I can come up with is that he went on a bad acid trip in his younger years and never really came back all the way.

You know, "how much ARE strawberries in Idaho this time of year." Hoot !
On a more serious note:
A man shot two people during a church service in White Settlement, Texas, on Sunday before two armed parishioners shot and killed him, White Settlement Police Chief J.P. Bevering said.

And that is exactly what I call poetic justice. Next !

Sad state of affairs when people have to take guns to church, don't you think?

Yes it is as I go to church to worship and feel safe.
It wasn't our choice to bring guns to church, we were forced to in order to protect ourselves.
The church that I attend (700 people) always has at least ten or twelve people strapped all the time.
We even have security at all entrances with people that have wired ear phones and microphone to warn the pastor and the rest of the security throughout the church.

Thank goodness they had the same kind of security in the church that just got attacked by a killer, don't you agree ?

Agreed.

The church that I attend (700 people) always has at least ten or twelve people strapped all the time

I find that shocking and to a degree, hypocritical.
You follow Jesus and yet you pack guns...... the two are not compatible in my mind.
Jesus would never have carried a gun......

johnny reb
30 Dec 2019  #115

the two are not compatible in my mind.

You have the mind of a non-believer in Christ so that is understandable.

Jesus would never have carried a gun......

If He thought it was necessary He would have.

Miloslaw
30 Dec 2019  #116

You have the mind of a non-believer in Christ so that is understandable

That is a very patronising comment.
I was brought up as a Catholic, like you.The whole bit.
I turned against religion, you turned against Catholicism.

If He thought it was necessary He would have

No way..... do you really not understand what Jesus preached?
He would have turned his cheek and allowed it to be slapped.....he would never have carried a weapon.....

TheOther
31 Dec 2019  #117

Thank goodness they had the same kind of security in the church that just got attacked by a killer, don't you agree ?

Saving lives is always good, but that doesn't address the root problem. Too many nut jobs and too many guns in the streets, and it gets worse every year. "If guns are a problem then everyone should be armed" is not the solution here.

Rich Mazur
31 Dec 2019  #118

What is the solution?

He would have turned his cheek and allowed it to be slapped..

It's hard to turn the other cheek when you are dead with a couple of bullets in your head. But, since Jesus was a miracle maker, everything is possible.

TheOther
31 Dec 2019  #119

What is the solution?

Dunno. Let the gangs kill each other off until no one's left, and then collect all guns? Hand out military grade weapons to everyone and wait until we have all kicked the bucket?

johnny reb
31 Dec 2019  #120

.....he would never have carried a weapon.....

How about His cane/rod that he killed the snake with ?

Too many nut jobs and too many guns in the streets,

Thanks to you Liberals that claim mentally ill people have Constitutional Rights too and that it was un Constitutional to lock them up for their safety and the publics safety.

Remember ? I do when all the mental wards were closed and the mentally ill were turned out on the streets.
It's your fault if anybody's !
Did you know that this guy was mental too ?
Cars don't kill people, the un responsible driver does.
Guns don't kill people, the mentally unstable person does.
Will you ever get it ?

But, since Jesus was a miracle maker, everything is possible.

Good man Rich, I see you read Lee Strobel's book "The Case for Christ."
