Just one post from me tonight after a long day with my 2 and a half year old grandson..... exhausted, but fun.
I was forced to catch this band at the Marquee in London back in the mid seventies by my Dublin born mate called Dell ( He looked like Lemmy from Motorhead) as these guys were mates of his.

It was one of the most enjoyable gigs I have ever been to, and I have been to a lot.
This is the Irish band Spud, who for some reason were quite big in Sweden at the time, with a tune called "The Sow's Ear".

You'd be hard pressed to find anyone in Ireland who's heard of them. Spud was basically a trad band. They were eclipsed by Horslips who wrote their own original material and produced a sort of lumpen Celtic rock that was strangely appealing despite having a decidely ropey quality. Now, THEY did amazing live gigs, legendary. They gigged in NI when other bands were afraid to go up there in case they'd meet the same fate as the Miami Showband.

I was forced to catch this band at the Marquee

They were playing support I imagine. Who was headlining??

Three songs that just feel right for me.

There have been many great bands on this thread, some I haven't heard before..Kudos!

How about bands that you don't like like? Milo......

The 5 bands that make me cringe every time I hear them!

#1 U2 The Edge has to be the worst guitarist in Rock history! Good luck getting a solo out of Mr. Effect Pedals:( He even wore that stupid looking skull czapka to his friends Funeral and was even married wearing it!!! LOL I wonder if he sleeps with that thing on?

#2 The Grateful Dead Although, musically talented. You never know when the song is or will ever end???

#3 Chicago I love the city, but hate the band!

#4 Doobie Bros. They might as well join up with Chicago because I cant tell the difference between them.

#5 AC/DC The kings of 3 chord noise! Every tune is either written in the key of E or A, quite boring rubbish........

U2 GUITARIST David Evans, aka The Edge, made his first public appearance at a charity fundraiser in Germany, just two days after a gruelling 4 hour procedure to remove a beanie hat that had been stuck to his head for the past 20 years.

Absolutely.

AC/DC

Awful band, agreed.

Doobie Bros

They're much better than Chicago.

Waterford Whispers is great isn't it! He's always worn a hat of some kind. It was probably just an affectation in his youth but then he probably started to thin on top so he carried it on. You might enjoy this:

They were playing support I imagine.

They were the only act as it was a St.Patrick's Day Special, pretty sure it was 1978.

@Joker

U2 - I liked their very early stuff only, before they got too big for their own boots.
The Dead - I just never "got" them at all.
Chicago - I liked and have their first three albums when they were The Chicago Transit Authority and played a powerful style of Jazz Rock.Later they were terrible.

The Doobies - I like "Long Train Running", but that is all.
AC/DC - Yeah, boring and repetitive just like a UK band you probably have never heard of but Atch will know, Status Quo.

Off the top of my head I would add to your list ELP and Rush.

That was funny! At some point he had to realize how foolish he looks wearing that old hat 24/7. He has plenty of money for a toupee or transplant. Its got to be hot as hell during the summer... Do what I did, just shave it off and be done with it, chicks like it too:)

They're much better than Chicago.

True, Its just too mellow and poppy for me. They did have Jeff Baxter and Michael McDonald who collaborated with Steely Dan as well. Another great prog rock band from the 70`s :)

The Chicago Transit Authority and played a powerful style of Jazz Rock.

Agreed, the first album was good and then they hit the skids around 1985 when Peter Cetera took charge.

The city of Chicago made them change their name ( CTA) is the name of the bus company they used without permission and aren't connected with Chicago at all.

Off the top of my head I would add to your list ELP and Rush.

Added! I like Rush`s instrumental songs, but the high pitched squealing is a bit much for me.

I like more bands than I dislike. They have to be really sour to make the Joker list.

I got a band for you......The Giraffes - Having Fun With ******** - Live on Fearless Music

youtu.be/GCktWycyA_0

They will wake you up and get you rolling, the singer has a caterpillar mustache like Pawians...lolol

U2 - I liked their very early stuff only, before they got too big for their own boots.

It's hard to say. I saw them during the Joshua Tree tour in Berlin in 2007, and it was a fantastic show. It was raining, and they didn't moan once about it, or even pretend that it got to them in any way.

But musically, they've done nothing since what, Achtung Baby? Apart from Miss Sarajevo, I can't think of a single song post-Achtung that I actually bother to listen to. New Year's Day is still one of my favourite songs of all time though.

Anyway, here's something a bit different for you Milo:

Beth - Terra Trencada. It's sung in Catalan, but it sounds like something you'd expect to come out of the US.

youtu.be/0HO7NhhfpHU

And of course, wouldn't be Saturday night without some Hüsker Dü.

youtu.be/xMe15tWC6gc

I know other people will have different opinions on this, but I far prefer the later Hüsker Dü stuff to the early stuff.

TBH, I am a bit fed up with the mysogyny on this forum.
Pam has left us,Lenka, Kaprys and Roz fight on...........and Atch as well, but I want to counter the balance....
All female music posts from me tonight....this is Dolores Keane and "The wind that shakes the barley".

Connie Dover could have been my wifes twin sister when I met her in 1978..... so I love this...

You must be as old as me LOL........ yeah, I liked Edgar Broughton too...

@Joker

Never heard of Mazzy Star, but her song was OK.

Never heard of Fiona Apple either and didn't really like it.
Some stuff crosses over the Atlantic, in both directions, but not everything.
Fiona Apple would not find an audience in the UK.

You saved the best till last...... Hole are only known by proper Rock fans, like me, in the UK, but not known generaly.
They were pretty good.

I have to comment on the posts made by our Serbian friends.
Crow's post was just too cheesy to comment on.
Vesko's posts were beter, I quite enjoyed some of them.
But what struck me is that both of you go on and on about your shared Slavic roots with Poles and yet your music betrays you.......

Nothing Slavic at all....... sounded like Turkish music to me.... even the Islamic style wailing......
The Ottomans obviously had a bigger cultural influence on you than The Slavs did......

Crnogorac3
3 Mar 2020  #202

Regarding several songs Vesko posted, some Serbian and Greek bands have the same production houses and the musicians use identical tunes.

Example:

youtu.be/jW5z-rZEQVI

Vasilis Dimas - Ragizei h kardia mou

youtu.be/R4rM-6eQMlc

Helena Paparizou feat. Anastasios Rammos - An Me Dis Na Kleo

Regarding the songs, some may prefer Greek language, others prefer Slavic language but essentially in my opinion Serbs and Greeks have among some of the best music in Europe. If anything, it can be classified as Byzantium culture.

I have to comment on the posts made by our Serbian friends.

Instead of your desperate and rather pathetic attempts trying to belittle other people's culture that is in every way superior to yours, why don't you instead share with us some of your Khazar culture?

Nothing Slavic at all.......

Being that you're a Khazar (a member of a turko-mongoloid tribe from Caucasus) residing in the UK, which artist do you Khazars have, other than Amy Winehouse - a drugged out junkie who used to collapse while on stage, making a total nuisance of herself, who couldn't even make it past her 27th birthday...

Apart from Miss Sarajevo

I will post now some titles by a Serb from Sarajevo who is a popular singer all over the ex-YU region.

Boris made a tribute song dedicated to Moscow.

who is a popular singer all over the ex-YU region.

Even more popular with the ladies part of the population, the dude aged so increadibly well.

Instead of your desperate and rather pathetic attempts trying to belittle other people's culture that is in every way superior to yours

Not at all, I am not trying to belittle your culture.
All I am saying is that it is not slavonic at all, but is more influenced by Turkish and maybe Greek culture.
I get annoyed when you Serbs try to call Poles brat when in fact you have moved miles away from slav culture in so many ways.

The songs you posted all sound Turkish to me....
Serbs are no longer proper slavs.

@kaprys

TBH, I am not a great fan of Paloma Faith, either as a singer or as a person.
But this song is pretty good and absolutely cr#ps on the Turko Serb rubbish the Serb nationalists are posting.
LOL!!!!

Hey kike, whatever our culture may or may not be, it has rendered us relatively immune to degeneracy, moral decadence and perversions you managed to corrupt the West with...

archive.org/details/entartetemusikdegeneratemusic

You should really read a few quotes from one of the greatest European composers Richard Wagner and inform yourself better what he had to say regarding your music.

Hey kike

LOL!!!!
You Serbs are really pathetic...... call anyone that calls you out a Jew?
Like children......
You carry on with your Turko Serb culture, but you can't deny it.
And unlike me, you are not true and proper Slavs...... too influenced by Ottoman culture.
Good bye fake Slavs...

Amy Winehouse - a drugged out junkie who used to collapse while on stage

youtu.be/gtRP1fRwyis

Ironically, her last live performance was in Belgrade before she died of a drug overdose combined with excessive alcohol abuse.

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amy_Winehouse

People in the crowd were shocked seeing her in this state and demanded a refund for the money they paid for the tickets.
