If they left before the war and never returned, they should be allowed to live their lives without any interference.
Fair.
However, if they left during the war, it raises questions about the situation in Ukraine.
Smart.
I fully support sending Ukies back to fight, or alternatively a special tax they pay which Poland can then use
Why am I not surprised?
The two countries, which have come out strongly in support of shipping Ukrainians back to die, are Lithuania and Poland. The other countries have been much more circumspect in their statements.
It's clear as day, why it is Lithuania and Poland that support such measures. Both Lithuania and Poland have a large part of their population living abroad, just as Ukraine does. Perhaps they think that if Russia attacks them, they'll also need Germany or the UK to ship their Poles and Lithuanians back.
Fact of the matter is, it's not possible to ship any Ukrainians back for at least another year - that's when the EU-wide temporary protection of their status expires. It's a near certainty that the status will be extended, however.
Germany and Estonia have already said that they will not be sending people back to a country at war, and that Ukrainians with expired passports will be able to renew their immigration docs.
Furthermore, today Ukraine's minister for Euro-Atlantic integration, Olga Stefanishina, stated that Ukraine will not be seeking to forcibly return anyone - not least because it has no means available to it to do so. All Ukraine wants is for people abroad to register in the enlistment rolls, so it can have an accurate idea of what manpower potential exists.
So once again, in typical Polish fashion, defence minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz was running ahead of the train with his announcements last week about sending Ukrainians home. In fact, he really shot himself in the foot. Because he will not be able to send Ukrainian men home, but he has already raised the expectations of the far right - expectations which will now be hard to put back into the bottle. Thus, on flat ground, your defense minister has set up a new fake dilemma for Polish society to discuss: "Either we give them weapons, or we ship them back."
