There was no need to invade Japan. A blockade would be enough to make them whatever the US would demand.
You overlooked the most important reason...to see how thay work on real people...

Not for no reason.

1) First they told us we have to open a second front ASAP. We told them we need time to rest after Berlin, and to transport all the fighting men east. We told them the earliest we could invade Japan is August.

2) The Americans still extracted out of us a promise to destroy the main Japanese military contingent - the Kwantung Army, based in Manchuria.

3) We promptly destroyed the Japanese in Manchuria, in absolutely record time. Thereby saving the US army hundreds of thousands of casualties.

4) We retook Sakhalin, and started waiting for the Americans to ferry us across to the Japanese mainland. They promised that they would provide us sufficient watercraft to make the amphibious landing.

5) By that point, it became apparent to America that Russia would make easy work of Japan, and demand the same split as in Germany.

6) Japan was beat, and was on its last legs. You bombed them with nukes, when it was not necessary, so that they surrendered only to you and not us.

7) You tried to do the same in Korea.

Bottom line - America used nukes so that Japan would not become a Russian satellite. We did most of the heavy lifting fighting their army, while you did a great job fighting their navy and liberating islands.

Maybe, but therapy wouldn't be possible under Putin's rule either, so my wish list is only that - a wish list.
