Brexit 2019 and Poland

an Irish guard who suspects that some guy from India is actually heading to the UK will question the Indian,

Yes, that's absolutely true. Anyway, there have been no checks on people at the Irish border for 20 years now and it hasn't led to a flood of people entering the UK via Ireland. It's all done at immigration control at the point of entering Ireland.

My sister lives in a border county and she says the main mood of the people is anger.

Who the fukk does the DUP leader in the Commons think he's speaking for?
The DUP bang on about Union - yet the North voted clearly to remain.
He is giving a speech about the right of democracy and the fact that the UK voted to leave.
In normal English language parlance I might say that he needs something, but that might be misconstrued.

Definite movement towards Common market 2.0. Remain voters shouldn't be satisfied with that. Brexit is crumbling.

No actually this is great news Delph. All this shows that parliament is hopelessly divided.
Ergo: people's vote.
Labour would win a General election, or at the very least, the Tories would make no progress.

Labour would win a General election,

And you might be right.

I have my finger over the sterling to Euro transfer button , I will press it at the first wiff of comrade corbyn getting into power.

If that moron wins Sterling is gone.....

I wonder how many other people will also bail out of sterling and shares in Uk companies.

Well at least until he puts a block on it like last time when you could only take 100 quid out of the uk.

wonder how many other people will also bail out of sterling and shares in Uk companies.

I don't.know, but I would guess it would in the high thousands.
A Socialist UK government would destroy our economy before they even got into Number Ten.....

Or give it a real boost, and actually do something to stop the rich getting richer and the poor getting poorer.

last time when you could only take 100 quid out of the uk.

That was the 1960s Milo:) They said the same about 1997 - but the stock market boomed instead.

Currency controls were normal pretty well everywhere during the post war years, and for very good reasons.

Milo:)

No actually this is great news Delph. All this shows that parliament is hopelessly divided.Ergo: people's vote.

With the deadline looming, there are really only three options now, accept the withdrawal agreement, ask for an extension, leave with no deal. The most likely outcome is an extension if they can come up with a good enough justification for it but I think the other EU members are running out of patience. I think there's a perception that an extension will just mean more faffing and stalling, leading nowhere.

They said the same about 1997 - but the stock market boomed instead.

The mistake they made was that Blair was all about cosying up to celebrities, bankers and waging wars in the middle east for the oil barons.

Comrade Corbyn is a different beast straight out of the coffin of carl marx. get ready to rock.

I think there's a perception that an extension will just mean more faffing and stalling, leading nowhere.

A widely held perception. If they haven't been able to come to any agreement in over two years, what will they achieve with an extension?

actually do something to stop the rich getting richer and the poor getting poorer

like in Venezuala or any other country where socialism (vs social democracy, ie capitalism with a welfare state) has been tried?

Atch

Don't know if people have seen Barnier's latest speech, that the UK will only be granted an extension on the understanding that they accept the withdrawal agreement.

"During that extension there will be no renegotiation of the agreement," Mr Barnier said.

"There will be no negotiations on future relations. We cannot negotiate with a member state on future relations - there is no legal right to do that."

"If there is no deal, there is no transition," he added.

So, the only remaining option is leave with no deal.

Hold your horses Atch. We're not there yet. There's always Wednesday, and it's inching towards a confirmatory vote on whatever motion is finally adopted - which means no Brexit. Keep the faith.

Today is interesting too, to see what desperate ploy May and that witch Leadsom come up with next.

Dougpol1

here's always Wednesday

Yes, I missed the news that the indicative vote stage is now complete. So it's a May deal (whatever she might have tweaked), No deal, Revoke, or an extension for a general election.

1 and 4 are all she has left and both will fail, so it will likely (eventually) be a toss up between No deal and revoke. Popcorn indeed.

I would had never believed it would really go down that way....a no-Deal? Really?

Miloslaw
2 Apr 2019  #651

It was always a possibility.
But there is this;

It was always a possibility.

If you followed Irish politics, it was always going to be a question over how the UK intended to leave without breaking the Good Friday Agreement and without establishing a hard border. I just don't think anyone (even the Irish themselves!) expected the Irish government to be so absolutely fantastic at pushing their point of view across, nor did anyone expect them to have so much influence over the EU27.

I wouldn't be shocked if this one goes down to the very last hours. Several governments in the EU27 have publicly had enough, Poland has made it clear that they want to see a lengthy extension to Article 50, and it's hard to see where the UK would get any agreement for yet another small extension.

May has FINALLY agreed to compromise. Now is the time to nail her and Brexit to the ground, relentlessly, by painful degrees. Labour can do this by insisting on confirmatory voting.

jon357
2 Apr 2019  #654

That will work as long as he's tough with the rebels. Kate Hoey (her surname's meaning in Polish fits her well) will always vote Brexit, as will Ms Flint (I regret voting for her as deputy) however yes, it does look ike we might have killed this fiasco once and for all/

Miloslaw
2 Apr 2019  #655

Labour can do this by insisting on confirmatory voting.

Labour will give her nothing......just like The EU.....nothing.....
Theresa "No deal is better than a bad deal" May,is a waste of time and space.
More time wasting for no purpose from Theresa "We will leave on March 29th" May......

When you voted for Leave what did you expect the EU to give ?

The problem with Brexit is not Theresa May or Labour - it is that Brexit is a dumb idea and whatever form it takes will be an economic calamity.

Presumably your opposition to Corbyn is because he is a Lefty but no Left Wing politician will cause as much wreckage as Brexit.

Miloslaw
3 Apr 2019  #657

When you voted for Leave what did you expect the EU to give ?

Nothing.

And that's exactly what we got.........

As for a Corbyn govt,Brexit will pale into insignificance if he ever gets in.

cms neuf
3 Apr 2019  #658

But then you could vote him out after 4 years - Brexit is permanent

Miloslaw
3 Apr 2019  #659

That's the way we want it..........

jon357
3 Apr 2019  #660

it is that Brexit is a dumb idea and whatever form it takes will be an economic calamity.

And fortunately increasingly a dead idea.
