The UK suffered such a high death toll because of the incompetence of their government. During the first wave, not only did they fail to act swiftly, they also send many old, hospitalized people back into retirement homes without making sure that they were no contageous, which led to an appalling death rate among the elders. They also never took adventage from being an island and introdzce border checks, and allowed people from high infectious countries like the US to fly in. Finally they also failed to introduce test regimes at airports when many other countries had done so long ago.

I wouldn't be referencing Taiwan if I were you, seeing as they're very big on 'enforcing' through various means including the wearing of masks which you abhor so very much.

Which is exactly my point that Western Europe is run by morons with the US not far behind. The problem here is that every time I say it, some obedient weasel will always give me a lesson about how "democracies" work.


I don't abhor wearing masks. I abhor morons who wear masks in their cars, in the parks, and in the middle of the Sahara desert.

Plus, my personal views are totally irrelevant when comparing the death rates.

When it comes to judging and comparing how successful different nations have been on suppressing the virus its quite difficult considering the different approaches taken on restrictions and lockdowns. Even when comparing the UK and Poland, Britain has never had a mandatory mask wearing outdoors rule such as in Poland for instance. On the other hand Poland as far as I am aware don't have an outright ban on households mixing unless they are in your 'bubble'.

As for comparing widely different countries in terms of geographical location, population density and cultural norms and deference or obedience to authority in many ways it is pointless. Questioning why the UK for example hasn't done as well as New Zealand, Taiwan or South Korea and ignoring those factors is a bit bewildering.

No. You compare everything that is based on human activities. That excludes the uncontrollable like climate but includes what you just mentioned.

Taiwan is actually a place that due to population density would be conducive to spreading viruses. The numbers below are the population per square kilometer, the virus death rates per million and the GNI per capita:

Taiwan - 650, 0.5, 26USD
UK - 275, 1870, 42USD

So, Taiwan is denser and poorer. Yet, no virus deaths. The UK is less dense, richer, and it's one of the worst death spots on the globe. Both islands.

The UK definitely, but most of the other Western European countries are run competently, it is just that they had no experience dealing with such a situation.

Taiwan and the other Asian countries on the other hand experienced a pandemic only a few years ago, and many safety measures we had to learn are completely normal for them, and of course their economies are not that interconnected. It is completely normal for them to wear masks in public places and while shopping. The government does not need to enforce anything there, you got already odd looks if you went without masks on the train even before the pandemic.

....and they run around with masks all the time because of the pollution! ;)

That too is a factor of course. Then again the air in some Polish cities can also be really bad at times when everybody uses their ovens, yet they do not wear masks.

Again, for the third time, the only numbers that count are death rates per million of inhabitants, not the TOTALS since the totals depend on the size of the country - an artificial creation for administrative purposes.

The rates per million numbers:

1. Hungary - 2857

17. USA - 1772
45. Germany - 994
118. India - 152

So, boys and girls, Germans are dying at the rate 994 divided by 152 or 6.5 times higher than Indians.

If this is still too complicated for you, a thousand dead in India is a lot better than a five hundred thousand in San Marino.

Please don't ask me where I would rather live.

BTW, if you divided India into ten separate states, would that matter to the virus stats? Only to a stubborn German, but not to the people who live in those ten states as the mortality rates would stay the same.

But to be fair, the catastrophe in India is because of an totally overwhelmed, non existent anymore health care system. Not to mention the millions of dirt poor and uneducated people living like in the middle ages.

There no point in comparing the rotten US with equally rotten WE.

A valid comparison is Japan vs the UK - or 81 vs 1870 deaths per million or 23 times higher mortality rate.
Both islands, democracies, and capable of counting dead bodies.

What is your point?

I have three. There should be an investigation into (1) why people in Western "democracies" have died at the rate 23 times higher, (2) are the Western governments criminally responsible for these deaths, and (3) are the Western governments liable for the economic losses they inflicted by imposing lockdowns.

Why don't just put the blame where all of it belongs....to China?
