Coronavirus in Poland

Where? There seem to be just a few areas where hospitals were seriously burdened, all of which are very densely populated.... Also early on it appeared that ventilators were a necessary part of treatment but better protocols have been worked out since.

I'm not saying that coronavirus isn't serious (for segments of the population) or that lock down wasn't necessary. It was a reasonable idea in the beginning but it's not a viable long term strategy... it's single purpose is to buy time in order to:

-prepare the medical response (wards, equipment, personnel)

-develop treatment protocols....

-work out some devastatingly effective strategy

Luckily enough this has not been so necessary since most governments' response has been pretty pathetic.... the Polish government did as close to nothing as makes no difference, preferring a bunch of pointless squabbles about elections....

This has been a good illustration of the idea that if you don't have an exit strategy going into something you'll never get out as someone will always come up with numbers showing the world will end if the lock down isn't continued.

In the US one governor said the lock down needs to continue until deaths stop.... (I assume no more comment is necessary)

Apart from overwhelming people with numbers without context, what is the Irish government doing about it's disease ridden care homes?

Firstly, the Irish government has clearly done a very good and professional job of managing the virus as the transmission rate is now one of the lowest in Europe and the curve is completely flattened. How's the curve in Poland? Oh yes, that's right, it's still rising.

Secondly, care home and residential clusters are a feature of the epidemic in every European country. The artilce you linked to contains outdated information despite its very recent publication date. Ireland has now tested every single member of staff and residents in those settings and it didn't happen in the three days since the Euronews article. The Health Service Executive has also sent additional medical staff to support those settings and most are now under control. What has Poland done about its residential clusters?

Finally, unlike Poland, the information about clusters etc is not hidden in Ireland. It's made public and the government are and will be, held accountable for any errors of judgement or mishandling. That won't happen in Poland.

Very true. When I hear things like 'Life will never be the same again' , 'there will be new normal...' I cringe.
How much damage this can do is not counted. Not even to economy but people's mental health, immune system, kids development etc

Oh honestly the Irish are so up themselves. Obviously they have done a reasonable job because the population is relatively tiny.

I think it's just extreme case of homesickness to the point when even Irish farts smell like roses. I can understand that even if it can be annoying from the outside

I was just busting her balls (so to speak) but one dassn't say a discouraging word about Ireland while she's around... she's our own Georgette (but I'm sure with better makeup sense)...

And the population of NI is even tinier and they've made a right old balls of everything because the DUP insisted on going with the UK plan. Significantly higher death rate per capita than the Republic. Mind you, they've changed their tune now.

I do think that this situation and what us has highlighted could lead to the break up of the 'yookay ' and the reunification of Ireland ....don't you?

About Poland though..how is daily life there? Is it locked down? Are

I have two different approaches in my family :
One family with two vulnerable adults- almost adult son moved out to his adult sister and with her takes care of the provisions etc for the parents in self-isolation

A family with one vulnerable older person-still living under the same roof with someone going to work every day plus family friend and other kid still visiting.

The same probably goes for the general public. Some are very scared, some play it cool and some are just idiots

Not just the Native Americans Roz, America in general as we were hit the hardest with Russia in second place.
When this first hit China suckered us for medical supplies that they were hording knowing what was coming.
As generous as America has always been throughout history we sent them our surplus only to find out later they lied to us.
So yeah, sad, very sad we got caught with our pants down AND that China could have stopped this virus in China if they wouldn't have secretly waited six weeks to act on it.

Now the Chinese are trying to hack our research & development for a vaccine that is starting to pi ss Trump off.
This could end up in a world war real easy with the Chicomms as Russia is not real happy with them either.

If that's the case then as a Polish American could you tell us some successful things Trump has done to fight the virus that we should copy here ? Because I see America having more 50x cases, 60x more hospitalizations, 90x more deaths, and much more economic damage than Poland has.

That report was published in November 2017 and is kind of irrelevant now.
Most "western" countries are going to take quite a big economic hit with this virus but I think Poland will fare better than most.

My point was that it has been a long time coming and the virus just compounded the problem.

Poland will fare better than most because a lot of countries don't grow enough food to feed themselves.
Food prices are already sky rocketing and it is only to get worse for Poland too.

Oh there is no doubt that this has been a disaster for the British economy . It's based on @US style neo liberalism. Very precarious.

I am sure Poland will recover better than either th US or the UK.

Actually the neoliberal era began in the UK (Thatcher becoming PM) and is generally far more.... advanced? than the US. At present it's ground zero for cutting edge neoliberalism.

Brexit might be (someday) seen as the beginning of the end - as populations have begun to reject the neoliberal consensus (though the old system is hanging on with all its might).

America closed ours on March 13th as Trump was fighting to do it even before that but the Democrats were calling him a racist and bigot slowing the process.

Remember Trumps State of the Union Address (February 4th) where Nancy the ripper Pelosi was tearing up Trumps speech that contained how worried Trump was about this virus while the Democrats ignored him while camped on their impeachment hoax.


Which is no surprise.


Now the Democrats want to keep America shut down until after the election to worsen the economy to make Trump look bad while Trump wants to open the economy now to make the coming Depression not as bad as it will be otherwise.

The Dems are all about power and control while Trump is about serving the people that elected him.
