Maf, what do you make of the current spike in infections? For me, it seems clear that people should avoid large groups where alcohol is involved (weddings, crowded places), but other than that, the situation seems pretty calm.

Is it a spike in infections or a spike in discovered cases? There's been no corresponding rise in hospitalizations which has been steady at 1600-1700 or so for a time now....

Given the fatality rates I'm assuming less than half of the asymptomatic cases have been found... it's important to remember that according to one estimate about 80 % of people are essentially immune and 80 % of those who aren't will be asymptomatic or have very mild symptoms (like a cold that never seems bad enough to see a doctor).

A lot of people's anxiety levels are stuck back in March when it seemed this would be very dangerous for large numbers of people or completely overwhelm the healthcare system... hasn't happened yet in Poland and I'm not expecting it to (knock on wood).

When you say 'discovered cases' do you mean people who have taken a COVID test and have then been diagnosed as having the virus, because I would be surprised if there are that many people who could afford the high cost of a test, unless of course it has become cheaper. As you say however a percentage of people will have a mild form of the virus and will not need to be hospitalised (but presumably are carriers and can spread the virus to more vulnerable people) It is quite a balancing act.

Well presumably when the government gives you the test it's for free... I'm not sure what the government's.... plan is on who they test but whenever random testing has been done they find lots more people have/do have it than they'd imagined....

It takes nothing but this basic fundamental rule of logic to realize that the whole mainstream discourse on COVID-19 and masks is political bullshit, regardless of whether masks are effective or not. All officials talking publicly about this have been flip-flopping in worldwide unisson from one position to its complete opposite without even acknowledging it, but instead calling all those who don't bend their minds to the jedi trick "conspiracy theorists", "science deniers", etc. Trying to prevent people from examining the contradicton with an ad hominem, fuucking hell. It says a lot about the state of people's education that such sh!t even works.

In the US, they flip flop every week, its just political to keep everything locked down until November election.

Its ok to go protest, but if you attend church you will be issued a fine.

This is the critical question today. The amount of new infections is nearly 600, yet it seems that this might well be the result of intensive targeted testing as it seems that the majority of infections are in clusters.

However, I'm predicting right now that in the very near future, travel abroad will only be possible with a negative test result.

Or, careless quarantine behaviour. People are too relaxed. Besides, we had a campaign and elections.

Recent explosions of new cases in Texas and Florida were accompanied by lowered rates of hospitalization... (which media coverage has tried to not dwell on...)

I'm fine with people choosing to wear them or not, I'm fine with governments recommending them, I'm fine with Trump wearing them, whatever. I would never attack a person for making that kind of choice. I don't even have huge objections to mandating them in public transport, since you also have the option to walk, cycle, drive a car. And airplanes, because you can't have a socially distanced plane while running a profit.

But what's happening now is governments are mandating them even in places where it's not germane to the situation. And openly encouraging vigilante enforcement by left-wing hate mobs, because you can't expect police and shopkeepers to confront people all day, but the government still wants to enforce the rules. It's a one-way road to social control. I would be very surprised if jurisdictions that are forcing masks now are ever going to rescind the mandates, except maybe some red states in the US.

Even the flu comparisons are dangerous. Governments might as well say: "Oh yeah you're right, we're going to mandate masks forever just to keep down flu deaths as well".

But some countries have already dropped mask wearing rules - including Poland and most of their neighbors. In Poland you have to wear one in a shop or on the tram and that is pretty much it. So that might be half an hour of your day.

I don't know if they work but it only costs a few zloty for a mask and if I'd not want to wear one even in a shop then I can get stuff delivered.

Americans and Brits are making heavy weather of something that every other country had just got on with and done. It's a weird thing because they are countries that take some civil liberties very seriously and in other cases are very repressive (drinking ages, prostitution, ****, drugs etc).

One nice thing recently is that shops are taking it more and more seriously, and people are being openly refused service until they get a mask.

Still plenty of selfish morons not wearing one inside bigger shops, but on the whole, compliance is there.

I'm not sure about the knowledge in Poland, but in Germany they talk more and more about the longterm effects of Corona. It seems it's not at all only a lung disease...it affects multiple organs and even the blood vessels.

Even after a survived infection people stay sick, they feel sick and weak...doctors and hospitals are preparing for lots of after-Corona-patients who need rehab and intensive care.

It's definitely not the flu!

I don't think you should call it 'corona' there are lots of corona's..like 'SARS ..avian flu...etc.

I don't know about America, but I think what Brits are most hacked off with is the ridiculous rules around wearing of masks. I think if it had been mandatory to wear them at the start, most people would have complied, but this is 4 months on and people are fed up of the clowns in power making it up as they go along.

For example, I can walk into Costa Coffee, order a drink to take away and I have to be wearing a mask. If I decide to sit down and have that drink inside, I don't have to wear a mask. I have to wear a mask in shops and supermarkets, but those working in them don't have to. What sort of crazy logic is this?

I think I've just got used to it....as everybody and his grandmom is calling it so...and all of the media!

I haven't and still think the Commie Chinese should be held accountable!

After newest information those cured won't be really cured for a long time....maybe never....

With that knowledge mounting any real try of "herd immunity" would have proven fatal for any society. Because that sickness isn't done with the overcoming of an infection. The won immunity is questionable and the longterm effects will put every health system to test for years to come!

In the next months we will know more than now....it's hard to give now exact data about long term symptoms if the disease is only a few months old...

Interesting....they questioned Germany's very first official Covid-19-patient. He already has no anti-bodies anymore, meaning he is not immune anymore. That means the won immunity holds no longer than 6 months...then it's back to square one and you can get infected again including the long rats tail of long term health (especially neurological) problems...
