For the average man or woman, democracy is as irrelevant as the distance to the moon for me as long as they are safe, and relatively well off.
And that's the holy grail nobody had managed to find till now.
Somehow autocratic systems don't manage to keep people satisfied and well off...not in the long term. There is not one example (actual or in history) which has achieved success like a capitalist/democratic society. With the help of a bowed media they can gloss over the failings for awhile, that's it.
And they can't guarantee safety either...they can maybe shoot criminals on sight but they will kill off their opponents too.
In the GDR people had a guaranteed job, they had their guaranteed bread and housing, education was free...criminality was nearly not existent and was handled deftly, foreign immigration was rare and if at all then only for work without any rights...and still, people yearned to kill that state, kick their rulers out and get their revenge on the STASI. Which made all that possible...there is a lesson somewhere...
PS: Even at the latest "election" in the GDR the party achieved far over 90% of all votes, even as the people on the streets were already rioting...it was a joke.
When I would live in a country where I know I'm being watched, where I know what "accidents" happen to people which criticize the leadership would I dare to cast my vote the "wrong" way? Would I go voting at all? Would I keep my mouth shut because all is so dandy here and I'm so happy with how my country is run and my beloved leader or because of fear and resignation? Not everyone is a hero...
