Music I have never got bored of

Miloslaw
1 Jun 2020  #361

Oh come on Milo, give it a chance

Yeah, that kind of Classical Music is right up my street.... :-)

I used to live for that heavy stuff, as long as it had melody

Same here, still do.

Megadeth, Testament, Metallica, they had well written tunes with some touch

Cant agree more.

Your Paliament post was spot on!
Cool track!

. just not Classical or Opera

Have you listened to much Kurt Weill? Not just Threepenny Opera, some of his other stuff. I never tire of it.

Have you listened to much Kurt Weill?

Music is like food or drink to me.
I will try anything once...... so, despite my doubts,
I will search Kurt Weill......

The Benares Song from Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny is one of my favourites. So is the Lottery Agent's Tango from Der Silbersee (and anything else from Der Silbersee). You already know the Alabama Song from Happy End.

Marianne Faithfull did some of his songs on her Twentieth Century Blues album about a decade back.

Oh come on Milo, give it a chance:

:)

Don't forget the grandaddy of all those guitar heroes:

Milo, since you like that heavy stuff, here's an album from some friend's of mine back in the day.

Funk, I leave you with this:

Ooh! I loved that track! Never heard of Parliament either. Maybe they weren't played so much in the UK. Reminds me of early Commodores stuff in a strange way.

I hadn't heard of Yngwie Malmsteen either, but amazing guitar playing. Guess there are huge gaps in my musical knowledge.

I have very broad tastes.
But I hate Classical and Opera music.

Me too, with the exception of a couple of classical tracks. Opera is torture, almost as unbearable as listening to bagpipes. No offence Delph ;)

Never heard of Parliament either. Maybe they weren't played so much in the UK.

They were not.
This was George Clinton's band and they also performed under a different name, which you may know, Funkadelic.

One nation under a groove?

Miloslaw
2 Jun 2020  #369

You got it!

They changed name because of some dispute but then got the Parliament name back and used that for some of their heavier Funk whereas Funkadelic were a little more mainstream. But they both had the same band members.

2 Jun 2020  #370

You got it!

It's the only one I know by them!

Miloslaw
2 Jun 2020  #371

@Chemikiem

It was their only UK hit.

Funkadelic's first album was great. It's got some psychedelic groove to it.

To dovetail Velvet Underground, Lou Reed's New York album:

Have you listened to much Kurt Weill?

I tried..... and failed to like him.... :-(

@AntV

Loved the Malmsteen, the other guys left me cold.

almost as unbearable as listening to bagpipes

Fair comment, but did you not notice that Big Country play their guitars to emulate that wall of sound produced by bagpipes?

@Chemikiem

Velvet Underground and Lou Reed are absolutely no nos for me, but Donald Fagen could do no wrong.... genius...

OK, so I am hitting Soul and Funk central tonight..... with all this Black Lives Matter stuff going on, I think it is right to pay tribute to the massive contribution black people have made to the world and music is one of them.

Charles Bradley unfortunately died recently, but just listen to his voice..this is very aptly titled "The world (Is going up in flames)"

youtu.be/IlNZlGWegcc

Charles Bradley again with a very soulful rendition of "Changes".... a Black Sabbath song....

youtu.be/xi49yirJiEA

At the risk of getting too miserable, I will switch to this very old tune, dodgy sound and video but this was one of the first songs to turn me onto funky music. This multi racial band from North London had Eddy Grant as a member...This is The Equals with "Black skinned blue eyed. Boys".

youtu.be/P5G3Ffta-ic

I will end with the king of Funk and Soul... Mr.James Brown.....with "Give it up or turn it loose"

I'll start how I ended my last posts, with some James Brown and probably the most sampled track of all time, "Funky Drummer".

youtu.be/AoQ4AtsFWVM

I am going to go all British funky now..... this is early sixties,Georgie Fame and "Yeah Yeah".

youtu.be/RdrdN1PFa-U

This is the band Steampacket, also from the early sixties, who had loads of band members that went on to more successful careers, up front you can see Long John Baldry and Rod Stewart.

youtu.be/_5lA6wsmpm0

Fast forward to the late seventies and a Jazz Funk band called Upp that were championed by Jeff Beck, who often played with them.
I was lucky enough to catch them live once in a pub in South Harrow.
Unfortunately Jeff was not in attendance.....this is Upp with "Give it to you".

youtu.be/uVwwLbe-A4Y

Next time I will take a look at later British Funk.

Don't forget the grandaddy of all those guitar heroes:

Good Pick! I seen him here in 2016, he still can rip. Had the same arrogant attitude and unbuttoned shirt, but his belly looks like hes having a baby. lol

youtu.be/RoSmyY0SWRM

He more like a virtuoso than seeing a band.

did you not notice that Big Country play their guitars to emulate that wall of sound produced by bagpipes?

Yes of course, but the sound doesn't set my teeth on edge like the real thing does!

@ Milo, well where do I start? Some great choices by you. I had never heard of Charles Bradley, but what a voice! I'll deffo be looking up more of his music. And James Brown, another one of my heroes, just gotta post this now.......

James Brown - Get Up Offa That Thing

youtu.be/1_uNMy20qAI

I've heard of The Equals, but only ' Baby come back'. Didn't realise Eddy Grant was a member. The song was great, loved it :)

Here's some tracks by a band I really like:

Average White Band - When will you be mine

youtu.be/zEdDw0eIGDs

Average White Band - Pick up the pieces

youtu.be/FnH_zwVmiuE

Average White Band - Cut The Cake

youtu.be/75bYDYLSP0o

Plus I like older Commodores stuff........

COMMODORES - Too Hot Ta Trot

youtu.be/cQqp3_Y_3Jg

Commodores - Slippery when wet

youtu.be/bLr5cL0eG2w

Commodores - Brick House

youtu.be/rrBx6mAWYPU

And finally a tune that always makes me feel cheerful

Detroit Spinners - Rubberband Man

@Chemikiem

Well Pam, I liked all the songs you posted and I have original vinyl copyies of most of those tunes.
But I had you down as an Indie Rock woman that also likes a bit of ethnic or world music.....never had you down as a fan of Soul/Funk/Disco music..but it is nice to know that you like to "shake your booty"... :-)

AWB can do no wrong by me.
The Commodores were great too, shame about Lionel Richie.....
The big giveaway about your love of Funk was "Slippery when it's wet"(great title BTW), because it was only well known by real fans.

Anyway, thanks for some great posts!

@Chemikiem

You like AWB why not check out these newer Scottish Funk Masters....The Haggis Horns with "Enter the haggis".

youtu.be/j1Tr4WIZDEc

I am just posting British Funk tonight.
I remember me and my wife, before we got married, spending time in pubs in the west end of London and this tune playing....and it sounded just right....Light of the World with "London Town".

youtu.be/VIJUKHsrM1k

Another tune that I remember from our young trips to the West end..."Hi Tension" by Hi Tension....

youtu.be/iWI_HjSGXA0

Here is another oldie but classic, Stretch with "Why did you do it",saw them live and they were great.

I have original vinyl copyies of most of those tunes.

Me too. I have hundreds of albums and singles, but sadly nothing to play them on. I can't bear to part with them though.

I had you down as an Indie Rock woman

Haha! It's strange the opinions we all have of each other. I like all sorts of music Milo. Heavy rock and Blues are my favourites, but I don't like to be put in a box musically. I had you down as the headbanger type only, but you like Jethro Tull and Steely Dan too.

I have never heard of Light of the World, but Hi Tension yes, loved that song. You beat me to it with Stretch, I was going to post that! It's a great song although it's the only one I know by them. The intro to it sounds very like the intro to Climax Blues Band's 'Couldn't get it right'.

Slippery when it's wet"(great title BTW), because it was only well known by real fans.

It's probably my favourite song by them! Yeah, that title lol...............

Now I'm not sure what you'll make of my next choices.....

Brecker Brothers - East River

Brecker Brothers - Some Skunk Funk

I have hundreds of albums and singles, but sadly nothing to play them on.

Same here... we went from vinyl to cassettes and to CD's and evetually went to internet radio stations, Spotify and Youtube.....about ten years ago I moved my hi fi system into the shed to make space for another armchair in the lounge...

. I can't bear to part with them though

Me too.....

It's strange the opinions we all have of each other

Yes it is, I obviously got you all wrong.... You,Joker and I share a lot in common musically.

. Heavy rock and Blues are my favourites

Again, same goes for Joker and me.... but with all the Black Lives Matter stuff going on I am sticking with Black music tonight.
But British Funk....
This is Atmosfear with "Dancing in Outer Space".

youtu.be/i8gEmznzFOY

Pure London Funk.... Princess and "Say I'm your number one".

youtu.be/jlLKNxDbsi8

Last one from me tonight..Loose Ends with "Hanging on a String"..

You can get a vinyl record player nowadays.
A friend got one just last year but I remember he bought new vinyl records for it.

7 Jun 2020  #382

So tonight I am just going for random Funk tunes....this is Donald Byrd and the Backbyrds with "Rock Creek Park"
youtu.be/PkXh4kRTBVk

It is strange how history comes back to haunt us...this song is just as relevant now as when it was performed. ..

Marvin Gaye "What's going on "...

youtu.be/jzPA-FrVu3I

I'll end with these guys, who I think come from Bristol, they are called The Heavy and this song is "How you like me now".

I moved my hi fi system into the shed to make space for another armchair in the lounge...

Blimey! How big was your hi fi system? lol

Loved the Rock Creek Park track. Donald Byrd, never heard of him before either! Marvin Gaye is just a legend and I love that particular track.

The Heavy I already knew and they're amazing. They are from Bath though, not Bristol. More of them:

The Heavy - What Makes A Good Man?

youtu.be/08h0IVs4RKQ

The Heavy - Short Change Hero

youtu.be/lkvScx3Po8I

The Heavy - Same Ol'

youtu.be/4OAkUelXoVY

The Heavy - Curse Me Good

youtu.be/ctVg85F5lp4

BTW Milo, What did you think of the Brecker Brothers tracks I posted? Interested to know if they are your type of music.

You can get a vinyl record player nowadays.

Yeah I know but not sure where I would put it these days. Not sure how good a condition my vinyl is in either. Been years since I played them and many of them had been played to death......

Miloslaw
8 Jun 2020  #384

Blimey! How big was your hi fi system? lol

Haha.....it wasn't that big but took up a corner of the lounge which now has an additional armchair in it.

I liked The Brecker Brothers,"Skunk Funk" was new to me and "East River" I have the single.

Just three posts from me tonight.
This is The Link Quartet with the brilliant Italian keyboard player Paulo Negri covering Georgie Fames song "Somebody stole my thunder".

youtu.be/sE2SEQ5yqEU

This is the great British band Speedometer with "Orisha".

youtu.be/q5r5_4_nZTg

I'll end with the superb Dr.John from New Orleans and one of my all time favourite tunes "Right place, wrong time".

@Joker

Wow!!!
What a post!
I was and still am a huge fan of SRV but have never heard this amazing song before.
I also knew nothing about Willie the Wimp and these later Chicago gangsters, we all know about Capone and his generation, but I had no idea that it was still going on......I am guessing that Chicago is now full of rival gangs and without one standout gangster ruling the roost?

The tune was terrific and I can't top that.... so won't post any tunes tonight.
Let that one stand!
Good job Joker!

Sunday night music...Joe Bonamassa with "Driving towards the daylight".

youtu.be/wTG-bCMG05E

This is Corey Stevens with a song called "One More Time".... this guys guitar style, voice and even his look, reminds me of Eric Clapton..but that is not a bad thing.....

youtu.be/RLJT94IOWDc

Patrick Sweany with "Every night ,Every, every day".
