Poland's aid to Ukraine if Russia invades - part 13

Korvinus
25 Aug 2024  #961

When the USSR and Warsaw Pact collapsed, what did NATO do?

Even if Mordor falls, Gondor should never disband it's military and stop manning the ruins of Osgiliath.
NATO should stay even with Russia in ruins. It already got resurrected twice, in 1917 and 1991.

But yes we owe Russia and Putin a debt and I have said this many times :

NATO was really on its way to irrelevancy with certain NATO members questioning its purpose.

Russian warmongering has ended all that and NATO is relevant and significant again. Never would I have imagined friendly, happy, liberal Sweden joining NATO or Finland joining.

Thanks Putin, you ensured NATO is back.

A good article in today's Daily Telegraph:
The fall of Vladimir Putin is now only a matter of time
Ukraine's incursion into Kursk will have been intended to bring forward the end of the dictator's rule

Ukraine's incursion into Kursk will have been intended to bring forward the end of the dictator's rule

Wow...

....Fourth, Russian POWs are a valuable bargaining chip. Ukraine wants the return of its Azov volunteers and other troops. The mothers of those raw Russian conscripts are pressing for prisoner exchanges.

Fifth, Ukraine has significantly tilted the negotiating table in its favour in advance of any final settlement talks. As long as Russia occupied chunks of Ukrainian territory, Zelensky had little to bargain with. Now, he has opened the door to land swaps.....

WHAT I SAID!!! :)

But first and foremost he is humiliating Putin and his till now invincible Red Army! That alone is not to measure in Ruble....for a man, for a gov, whose image of strength and control is EVERYTHING every day having ukrainian troops on russian territory, unable to get rid off, is so deadly!

PolAmKrakow

@Bratwurst Boy
Have you looked at the comparisons of land captured or controled by either country? Ukraine has a chip, but its not nearly as big as Russia's. Its something, and I am not saying its a nothing burger, but its not enough. We have been saying Putin will fall because of the war since the war started. I dont think the west gives Vlad enough credit for how he makes things look inside his country. We know the major cities are doing fine. Its the nowhere places that are suffering all the losses.

Bratwurst Boy

Ukraine has a chip, but its not nearly as big as Russia's.

Thing is Ukraine shouldn't have any chip at all.....that wasn't part of Putin's grand plan!!! :)

If we are honest nobobdy believed Selensky able to do that....there was a mighty underestimation all around....who knows what else he can think of and we (and Putin) not?

The other chip they have is missiles that can hit North Nigeria. It's a huge problem for Putin - it's been shown that their air defenses are poor and makes it clear that Ukraine has other options apart from surrender

PolAmKrakow
25 Aug 2024  #968

All I am saying is that tempered expectations are what should be called for. This is not a massive land grab. It is a very good move, but it remains to be seen how long they can hold this land for.

But first and foremost he is humiliating Putin and his till now invincible Red Army!

Exactly. Poostain is also finding it very hard to recruit replacement troops for the hundreds of thousands killed and of course the r*SSian media's fairly obvious obfuscation and spin about their losses has ordinary r*SSians genuinely worried.

His days are numbered.

We got rid of Sunak and his Conservative gang, the Seppo voters are going to flush away trumpet, and Poostain's seen the writing on the wall.

What a time to be alive!

The other chip they have is missiles that can hit North Nigeria

An entirely new type of drone that's long range and can't be stopped!

@Bratwurst Boy

there was a mighty underestimation all around...

And an overestimation of Putin and the stability of his regime. We thought Putin's position was unassailable, then the Wagner mutiny happened and Putin had to negotiate in order to save his neck. A few weeks ago it seemed like the front was only ever heading into one direction: Kiev. Now we see fighting in Russia proper, and the Russian propaganda is preparing its' people for a long struggle in order to retake those areas. 2 1/2 years into a full-scale war. Incredible.

Bratwurst Boy

We thought Putin's position was unassailable,

*nods*

....and that's exactly what he wants the world to see.....and only THAT!

Works....till it no longer works....from now on it should be only going downwards. Such a shattered image is very hard, maybe even impossible to repair, to make it as it once was. People won't forget so easily!

Of course....for repairs first he needs to get rid off those pesky foreign troops on his territory....

Wagner mutiny happened

Something very.... fishy about that in retrospect.... I'm most of the way toward thinking it was an elaborate loyalty test (note who was arrested/fired afterward and who wasn't).

The biggest advantage Ukraine has had has been flexibility and innovation - neither of which are hallmarks of russia which ruthlessly punishes both.

Crossing the border into Kursk exposed one more russian 'red line' as being a fairytale.

russia's only advantages are numbers and complete indifference to loss of human life..... which are not longterm winning strategies.....

to Ukraine and Sevastopol

What about Estonia, on the fvcking outskirts of St. Petersburg.

Each time Novichok say "Russia had to invade Ukraine because NATO would place nuclear weapons near Kharkov" I ask him "What about Estonia?" A NATO member since 2004, yet no nuclear warheads are placed there.

Russian shills just repeat every lie to justify Putin's misguided invasion, while not even trying to be remotely credible or consistent.

Novichok

What about Estonia, on the fvcking outskirts of St. Petersburg.

Russians don't owe anybody an explanation or consistency. It's up to them where to draw that red line. The US threw fit about nukes in Iraq but not in Pakistan.

How about this, dumb Polak...

Estonia is a worthless shlthole. Eastern Ukraine, on the other hand, - now Russia - has a lot of good things greedy Western mother fvckers would love to put their hands on.

To top it all off, NATO would love to have the Sevastopol naval base, too.

BTW, it's not about nukes. Nukes are on the ICBMs and on the subs that can hide within a five-minute flight to DC and St. Pete.

NATO is how DC warmongers rip off US taxpayers and Russia is how they justify it.

The US needs NATO as I need two more heads.

Korvinus

Somehow Russia can exist with a NATO-oriented Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Finland, Poland, Romania etc. It will survive with NATO-oriented Ukraine too.

Sure, the authoritarian gov of Russia will have a harder time convincing citizens that there is no alternative to its cleptocratic ways if democratic and less corrupt Ukraine exists around the corner, but I don't know why we should care much about Putin's political career. It's already been going on for too long.

Tacitus

Estonia is a worthless shlthole

Estonia: 28k income per capita

Russia: 15k income per capita

Estonia has a thriving IT industry and has become an example for others to follow in terms of digitalization.

thestack.technology/estonia-technology-hub-digital/

Yet another point on the Novichok own counter.

Eastern Ukraine, on the other hand,

Yeah, I am sure that is what the West really needs. More underdeveloped territory that needs to be brought up to Western standards. We are still paying for the last enlargement of the EU 20 years ago.

To top it all off, NATO would love to have the Sevastopol naval base, too

Why? Where is the special benefit there? NATO controles already access to the Black Sea via the Dardanelles and has numerous (potential and real) naval bases in and around the Black Sea.

The US needs NATO as I need two more heads

If those include brains you might wanna reconsider.

Novichok

It will survive with NATO-oriented Ukraine too.

Russia remembers Yugoslavia so it decided to ensure its survival by other means. Smart Russia.

So what?

If Russia wanted Estonia Russia would have kept Estonia.

Russia wants Eastern Ukraine and the Russians there so it will keep Eastern Ukraine.

If you think Russia is wrong, email Putin. He is all alone and shaking in his boots so he will appreciate your concern and advice.

Sorry about Stalingrad.

Indeed. Poor man doesn't even have the courage to directly adress the Ukrainian invasion of Kursk.

Z will be very sorry very soon. The dead Ukrainians already are.

That PR stunt did only one thing to Putin...Russians are running out of patience with his nice SMO. In that sense, ironically, P is Z's best friend.

As a reminder...take a chill pill...

It was really stupid to fvck with Russia....OK, the Soviet Union...

Memo to the Red Army: You were way too nice...You should have executed 25 million of them or until empty...

authoritarian

Through centuries Russians were trained into apathy - first by the tsar administration, then by the bolsheviks, and finally by Putin's authoritarian regime.

No ruler of Russia wanted independently thinking subjects that could be critical of reality and act without a direct order.

They wanted exactly that - an apathetic mass - that Russians do not run to the rescue without being ordered to do so by the higher ups.
Russia remembers Yugoslavia

The collapse of Yugoslavia turned into an ugly genocidal civil war but as long as Serbs had the upper hand and genocided others Russia was okay with that and wanted the West not to interfere. So what? Balkans is also the West's immediate neighbourhood, it's actually closer to Western Europe than Russia (basically next to Italy). It was the West that would have to deal with countless waves of refugees if the war was allowed to fester.
And yet NATO didn't need nuclear weapons to stop the war in former Yugoslavia. Bombing Serbs with conventional weapons ultimately proved to be effective in this regard.

Curious. Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia have much weaker military than Ukraine and no airforce at all, yet Russia dares not touch their territory despite them also being part of the glorious Soviet Union up to 1991.

Seems like the parts of combined West protected by NATO treaty are quite secure. That's why Russia can't stand the thought of Ukraine joining NATO - because then Russia would have to stay away from Ukraine too and focus its warmongering ambitions... I don't know where, for Kazakhstan already received Chinese protection.
