Coronavirus in Poland

Rich Mazur

China can be destroyed in months without using the virus. Virus as a weapon would be dumber than a nuke as a police weapon.

It looks to me like Poland does not have any coronavirus cases as of right now. Correct?

Would the EU allow you to set up screening at your borders?

jon357
1 Mar 2020  #63

None confirmed by the government yet; they are not however known for transparency. There are people currently in isolation.

Italy, also in the EU has screening at airports. Whether it would make a difference or not here is a matter for public health advisers.

How about communion where everyone takes a sip of wine out of the same chalice in the Catholic Church

That does not happen in Poland.... the priest drinks a small amount on behalf of the congregation (who only take the wafer).

That does not happen in Poland

Quite a few parishes in Poland (usually at the NeoCats' special Saturday PM mass) do that, however alcohol is at least an antiseptic.

They have now stopped the congregation from sipping from the same cup here also.
Plus they have even stopped shaking hands after communion..
How about Poland ?

Quite a few parishes in Poland ....do that

It's not part of mainstream RC services (I'm not a believer but I've been to a lot of service in a number of different cities over the years).

There's so much round here that it's almost becoming mainstream. An odd bunch and banned in some dioceses round the world. They use ordinary bread and pass the cup usually.

How about Poland ?

Some parishes read out a pastoral letter about it. In PL the handshaking at the Peace is usually less effusive than in some other places.

IME it's mostly just looking around and nodding at each other ... occasionally a friendly sort (or a child) will shake people's hands.

jon357
2 Mar 2020  #70

Yes, the same IME.

It's probably a good idea to avoid any crowds or large assemblies right now.

Did you notice how many traditions involve passing crap that can kill or at least make you sick? Like those idiots in Iran licking some damn wall or whatever.

What do you think people should do in the event of contracting Coronavirus....are hospitals in Poland really prepared and equiped including trained doctors etc...so far I not convinced....are the government really focused on this problem which affects us all...? What are the instructions/advice if anyone believes they could have the virus...yes washing hands is a start but what happens next? Not convinced that the public have been kept up to date with the current position in Poland.

In PL the handshaking at the Peace is usually less effusive than in some other places.

I was at a mass last year in Warsaw and people just nodded - there's no doubt that Poles are a weird lot! A nod does not constitute a sign of peace.

What are the instructions/advice if anyone believes they could have the virus.

In Ireland the advice is:

How to self-isolate: rte.ie/news/coronavirus/2020/0225/1117599-coronavirus-advice/

They were saying on the Irish news today, that to catch it from somebody else you generally need to be about 15 minutes in the vicinity of an affected persson, within a distance of between one and two metres.

Atch, please forgive my boundless ignorance. A GP is a General Practitioner, right - a doctor? If I get sick and call my GP and he hangs up on me I would find a new doctor. Why would a GP hang up on me?

Lyzko

G.P. = Gen'l Practitioner aka "praktischer Arzt"

mafketis
3 Mar 2020  #76

Why would a GP hang up on me?

I think that was Irish humor....

In Poland the term is family doctor (lekarz rodzinny) another term is primary care physician (lekarz pierwszego kontaktu). The general idea is you always go through that doctor first and get referrals to other specialists as needed from that doctor. Despite the name different members of the same family might have different family doctors.

Anyway there was a case in Germany where a guy who suspected he had coronavirus called the special hotline over 60 times with no one picking up the phone and then he called his family doctor who told him to stay away... I think he eventually went to a hospital.

If I had symptoms I'd call my family doctor (actually the outpatient clinic of a local research hospital) and get instructions from them...

"Family physician" = Hausarzt/-aerztin

Why would a GP hang up on me?

I was being a bit facetious. The thing is that in Poland things are always very random. If you call a GP and ask what you're supposed to do about coronavirus, the chances are you'll be met with a shrug of the shoulders and 'no, niestety, nie wiem'. He/she may well tell you that they haven't received any directives from the government in that respect so you're on your own. Information can often be very hard to come by. It's a legacy of the old Commie system, keep everybody ignorant, ignorance breeds fear and paranoia, fear and uncertainty make people more compliant.

you'll be met with a shrug of the shoulders and 'no, niestety, nie wiem'.

Pity an American visitor who needs medical attention. I got that shrug - "no, you can't without paying first, cash only" - and was on the plane back home next day. That moronic system wouldn't take my credit card either or even look at my travel insurance with the 800 number right on it.

Never again.

Paulwiz

It still sounds sort of Kafkaesque. Do the doctors have no profit motive - no monetary reason to see a patient? Or are they so busy already that they aren't interested in more business? And based on Rich's experience, would it help to buy a short-term insurance policy from a Polish company before my visit? (I'm assuming here that Rich's policy was from an American company.)

I guess I might be a bit off topic here but this is all very enlightening.

Rich Mazur

Do the doctors have no profit motive

I never got that far. I mean to see a real doctor - white coat and all. I got dumped by the first moron I met when I walked in.

Rich had two policies - both very effective in Poland - each with a guaranteed payment and subject to the verification by a simple 800 number phone call. That was too much for the morons to even consider, much less attempt.

It still sounds sort of Kafkaesque.

Because it's an invented story.... a couple of questions from other posters ended up poking holes in it almost immediately.... just ignore anything that troll writes.

Rich Mazur
3 Mar 2020  #83

Because it's an invented story..

If that story is invented, everything you wrote is invented since it has not be been the result of an under-oath deposition with criminal penalties for lying.

Including your claim that what I wrote is "invented".

Ah, medical receptionists, a bastion of arrogance and stupidity all over Europe.

johnny reb
3 Mar 2020  #85

Not just Europe delph, here in America too.
When they get arrogant with me I just say, "I don't care for your tone nor demeanor", is there a civil supervisor I may talk to."

Anyways back On - Topic.
Atch you are spot on AGAIN !

It's a legacy of the old Commie system, keep everybody ignorant, ignorance breeds fear and paranoia, fear and uncertainty make people more compliant.

And that is exactly what is going on with the Coronavirus.
Here, put things into perspective......
The World Health Organization has determined that the flu kills between 250,000 to 500,000 people each year.
And these are mostly people with weak immune systems. (The very old)
Stay healthy and you can fend off and recover from the Coronavirus in a week or two just like you can the flu.
The biggest thing to fear is fear itself.

Thanks for restoring the thread Johnny.
My takeaway is that I need to understand a little more about the Polish medical system and particularly my travel medical insurance before I jump on a plane.

If you are worried about coronavirus, throw away your television.

Well the first case in Poland is confirmed, the patient arrived from Germany and is currently in the university hospital in Zielona Góra (not very far from German border).

wiadomosci.onet.pl/swiat/koronawirus-w-polsce-pierwszy-potwierdzony-przypadek-relacja-na-zywo/vbpgf45

There's also the case of a couple of schoolgirls in boarding schools in Police (also close to German border next to the Batlic sea but they had come back from Italy) but that's still suspected rather than confirmed...

Some panic buying has happened there

wiadomosci.onet.pl/tylko-w-onecie/koronawirus-puste-polki-w-sklepach/2q882tf

Personally, around a week ago I started buying a bit more non-perishables than usual every time I went shopping (almost every day) so I already have over two weeks of provisions.... best case scenario: I have to do less shopping in the future, worst case scenario: I won't be contributing to the chaos if it comes to that....

jon357
4 Mar 2020  #88

We're lucky in that we have probably at least a couple of months' worth of perishables at home anyway for reasons unrelated to Coronavirus. I was in the supermarket the other day; no panic buying at all, though there were a few obvious preppers there.

Common sense is important. Wash your hands well, avoid crowds if possible.

Perishables (above) should read non-perishables.
