Coronavirus in Poland

Torq
7 Mar 2020  #121

There is hope that the virus will vanish due the warmer temperatures till next autumn/winter.

There are about 50 infected people in Thailand, and the virus is spreading there at 33 degrees Celsius. How hot it would have to be in Europe for the virus to vanish?

Quite. Iran's mild to warm at this time of year too.

That's how it works with the flu...that's how it worked with the SARS...*shrugs*

Wouldn't matter as when it is summer North of the equator it is winter South of the equator.
The Chinavirus would ping pong back and forth.

The Chinavirus would ping pong back and forth.

Thanks. I knew I could count on your support.
Speaking of warm...Does it mean that global warming, rather than killing us as Greta - the climate wizard - said, will kill the Chinavirus, instead?

If that is true, Rich, Poland should be safe as they just had the warmest winter in 245 years.

I wouldn't want to live there, but I wish them the very best.
They said no to Merkelvirus, so, hopefully, they will repel the Chinese kind.

It would seem that this morning passengers arriving from Italy at Heathrow Airport, Gatwick and Bristol Airport are not being checked for possible Coronavirus...I just hope that the Polish Authorities do test (possibly quarantine) passengers arriving back from Italy, South Korea, China etc as this will surely be an effective way to contain the virus....

johnny reb

"Surely" is the key word there that should be replaced with "hopefully".
How about the military that travels in and out of Poland ?
How about say a E.U. traveler into Poland that has contracted it ?
How about an American business man that has it without knowing it ?
Plus, there is not enough test kits to test everyone coming into Poland.
Most people that have had it think they have had just a touch of the flu and recover quickly on their own.
Stay back away from people when you talk to them, keep your hands from touching your face and wash your hands for 30 seconds with lots of soap often and you will live to be a 100.

How long would you quarantine them for ? Where ? Who is going to pay for that ? What if they have other health conditions ? Do we have energy ugh doctors and nurses to do that or would they be more useful doing their day jobs ?

It's OK being cautious but randomly locking up anyone who came from a country 1000km long is over reacting.

A polish woman is in quarantine at the hospital. She recorded a vodeo thats on youtube that explains how the polish authorities handled her.

You have raised some important questions for people living in Poland and other countries...washing hands and keeping your distance is of course good advice...when I used the word 'surely' it simply referred to tests being carried out in the hope of containing the virus or at the very least reducing the chances of it spreading.... it would seem that Italians are restricted in travelling around Italy but that it is ok to catch planes to other countries, and if countries like the UK for example are not checking passengers on arrival from high risk countries such as Italy, South Korea etc, then there is little damage limitation.....passengers are then free to use public transport from the airport with a high risk of infecting others.

It just seems to make sense to test those passengers from high risk countries.....as for cost well it all depends on the government and how important they believe it is to protect the population......as for cost I am sure they could find the money to finance tests if they really tried...(perhaps reduce the 500+ scheme to 200+)

I agree, I am sure there are plenty of people who have the virus without knowing it....this is why tests are so important before passengers use public transport from airports....(some people think that all passengers arriving from high risk countries should be quarantined for 14 days)

He he - god luck telling the residents of Polska B that you are docking them 300 zl for each kid while you test some guys coming back from skiing or art history trips to Florence.

I know it's right to be concerned but the fact is that public health services and unlicensed finances tend to run at full capacity and it's not easy to find the physical resources to do that and the cash. Which means trade offs have to be made. If I look at relative risks and oss of life for example I would far rather have police and ambulances working with traffic accidents than on trying to enforce quarantines.

this is why tests are so important before passengers use public transport from airports

And with over a quarter million passengers a day using Heathrow airport just HOW are they going to do that kind of mass testing EVEN IF they did have enough test kits to do it. Those tests aren't instant, they have to be sent out to a lab.

I am sure there are plenty of people who have the virus without knowing it.

Exactly, a lot of people that have had it never knew that they even had it.
Just because you shake hands with someone with the Chinavirus doesn't mean that you will catch it.
What makes me most upset is to see the U.S. media using it for a political weapon.

johnny reb......quarter million passengers a day using Heathrow airport just HOW are they going to do that kind of mass testing

Your figures of quarter million may be right but I was suggesting screening only those passengers flying in from high risk countries such as Italy, South Korea etc...and I don't think that would come to a quarter million passengers per day.....As for the 500+ scheme, it won't last forever and in time changes could very well take place with changes in government, or other issues requiring finance etc, so people shouldn't really rely on this payment as a given and should instead be prepared to take a drop...of course finance for the virus testing could come from other areas....

cms neuf...it's not easy to find the physical resources to do that and the cash

Not easy true....but not impossible....the Polish government can find the resources and money if they got a little creative with their finances etc.....many other governments throughout Europe and elsewhere can always find the money if push comes to shove....

Interesting! The actual data from the WHO:

Coronavirus mortality rate South Korea 0,3%

Coronavirus mortality rate Italy >5%

....and nobody knows why!

Certainly it is recogised that the life span of Italians is longer than any other european country and of course as a consequence the aging population in Italy are in the risk category for Coronavirus...hence the numbers of deaths are on the increase..... it is experiencing very severe restrictions as the government are trying to prevent the virus from spreading to Southern Italy.... Lets hope Poland is looking and learning from the actions being taken in Italy....

Not any more......they are "controlling" this in
a typically Italian chaotic fashion.
The so called quarantined zone is not quarantined at all and today, trains were leaving Milan Central station for Rome and Zurich.......

Braveheart16

The trouble was with the Italian preparations to contain the virus was that for some reason news of restricting the population in North Italy was leaked and people panicked and started to travel out of the zone to other parts of Italy or indeed other countries in Europe....

Coronavirus mortality rate Italy >5%

On 21st February "4th case of coronavirus in Italy" was reported...

polskieradio24.pl/5/1223/Artykul/2459517,Czwarty-przypadek-zakazenia-koronawirusem-we-Wloszech-38latek-trafil-na-OIOM

... on 25th February - 229 cases, 7 deaths. Today in Italy we have 6300 infected and over 300 deaths (officially registered cases).

I don't want to spread panic or anything, but this might be the right time to fulfill the old prophecy and evacuate Pope to Poland.

I was just asking myself why is there a flu season?

Apparently, it seems like the flu virus is more robust in a cold and dry environment. I guess I won't be bitching about humid summers anymore.

That's a pretty remarkable development.

Maybe because Italy has an older population?

Age pyramids look similar - nothing that would justify such disproportion in mortality rates.

What worries me is that at the beginning they said 1.2% is the maximum mortality rate, a couple of weeks later officially 2% was supposed to be the treshold, a couple of days ago it was 3.4%, and now apparently it's closer to 5%. If this virus spreads as much as common flu...

You're right, twice the old people doesn't come anywhere close to discrepancy of mortality rates between the two. So, that theory of mine goes into the wastebasket.

I read that the average age of those who have died in Italy is 81 and mostly from Lomabrdy. I wonder why there's so many in Lombardy as opposed to other parts of Italy. Did some of these folks live in the same nursing home or something of that sort? I wish we could get more detailed info.

My two year old came down with something a couple days ago, and first thing I thought was coronoavirus. This stuff gets in your head.

Those are good, BB; but, I'd like to see more relational data. For instance, in the US, 13 of confirmed coronavirus deaths originate from one nursing home in Seattle-area. But, relational data may be academic right now. Seems like the professionals think we're past a containment phase and in a mitigation phase.

.....and after everything I read and learnt by now, you might be still spot on with your age-theory about Italy's high mortality rate.

Italy is the oldest country in Europe and after Japan the second oldest in the World.

About 23 percent of Italy's population is 65 or older

So many old and frail people means alot more potential victims for the virus.....

.....overwhelmingly aged between 63 and 95 with underlying serious illnesses.

Yeah...they better get the pope out! ;)
